THE MASTERS TRAILER

After a couple tantalizing-if-oblique teasers of Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master trickled across the Internet over the past few months, the film’s first full trailer gives us a much more complete picture of its story: WWII vet Freddie Sutton (Joaquin Phoenix) struggles to find his way after the war, and ultimately finds himself by the side of Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and his wary wife Mary Sue (Amy Adams). A self-described “writer, doctor, nuclear physicist [and] theoretical philosopher,” Dodd is also as the beguiling head of a faith-based organization, into which Freddie gets deeply involved.

That organization has been rumored to be based on Scientology, and Dodd on its founder L. Ron Hubbard, and this trailer certainly features lines that echo common criticisms of the religion. One skeptic says that “good science by definition allows for more than one opinion” before suggesting Dodd’s group is a “cult,” and Dodd’s own son Val (Friday Night Lights‘ Jesse Plemons) tells Freddie of his father, “He’s making all this up as he goes along — you don’t see that?”

Casting Net: Kenneth Branagh to play villain in (and direct) Jack Ryan film. Plus: Lena Headey, Abigail Breslin, Josh Holloway

• Kenneth Branagh is already set to direct the next untitled Jack Ryan spy thriller (starring Chris Pine as the popular character based on Tom Clancy’s bestsellers). And now the Shakespearean actor is also in talks to star opposite Pine as the film’s villain, a Russian bent on destroying the American economy. Given the way these thrillers often end up, the casting will likely put Pine in the unusual position of getting to shoot at his boss. [Variety]
• Lena Headey (HBO’s Game of Thrones) and Jared Harris (AMC’s Mad Men) will costar opposite Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower in the feature adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s novel The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The series follows Clary Fray (Collins), a 15-year-old girl who learns she is part of the Shadowhunters, a team of warriors consigned to battle against an array of evil creatures. Headey will play Jocelyn Fray, Clary’s mother, and Harris will play Hodge Starkweather, the mentor to a group of young Shadowhunters. [Cassandra Clare/Tumblr]
• Abigail Breslin has joined Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and Juliette Lewis in the feature film adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play August: Osage County. She’ll play Jean, the 14-year-old daughter of Roberts’ character, who likes to think she’s more rebellious than perhaps she really is. John Wells is directing from Letts’ screenplay. [Deadline]
• Josh Holloway (ABC’s Lost) has signed onto the corporate espionage thriller Paranoia, as an F.B.I. agent keeping tabs on Liam Hemsworth‘s character, who’s being blackmailed to spy on his company’s rival firm. Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman, Amber Heard, Richard Dreyfuss, Embeth Davidtz, and Lucas Till costar. Robert Luketic (21) is directing. [Variety]

FIRST LOOK: Marvel unveils top-secret 'Avengers' short film 'Item 47' -- EXCLUSIVE

The existence of Marvel’s latest short film has been stirring speculation for weeks, though no one knew for sure exactly what it was, who stars in it, or what the title means.
What is Item 47? Now, finally, some answers.
The film is the latest in the company’s series of shorts dubbed “One-Shots,” a comic book term for stories that wrap up in one issue. Lizzy Caplan (Party Down, pictured) and Jesse Bradford (Flags of Our Fathers) star as a down-on-their-luck couple who find one of the discarded alien guns from the finale to The Avengers — and proceed to make some incredibly bad decisions.

Marvel’s One-Shots have been used as bonus features on home-video releases for Thor andCaptain America, and this one will be available Sept. 25 on The Avengers Blu-ray, with a special screening planned for San Diego next week during Comic-Con.
This is the longest, most elaborate of the Marvel shorts so far, and could be a first step toward using short-subject films to dive deeper into the Marvel universe and introduce beloved but less-familiar superheroes to the mainstream.
Item 47 refers to the gun itself, which S.H.I.E.L.D. would like very much to retrieve from the hapless young troublemakers. “The world is topsy-turvy now. There’s been an alien invasion, and things are crazy,” explains Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito, who directed the film himself. “So when this gun literally fell into their lap, this is a sign: We’re going to rob a few banks, we’re going to buy a boat, we’re going to the Caribbean, and all our problems will be solved.”
Two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (Maximiliano Hernández, returning from Thor and The Avengers, andLost’s Man in Black Titus Welliver, making his Marvel debut) are given the job of cleaning up the mess and stopping this modern Bonnie and Clyde (not coincidentally named Benny and Claire.)
The goal was to show some non-superpowered people reacting to the aftermath of The Avengers. “Anything that expands the world and shows you the more human elements of it, that just makes the world more colorful and fun for the average viewer,” says Eric Pearson, who wrote the screenplay for Item 47, as well as the previous two One-Shots: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer and The Consultant.
Each starred Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson, but those films were much shorter — no more than 4 minutes, compared to Item 47‘s 12 minute run-time — and they were single scenes with few visual effects or action. Item 47, in contrast, goes on a much bigger ride.
Marvel is exploring whether short films like this could now go even further. The goal is to have a short accompany the home-video for each feature film, and they’re currently devising scripts for companion pieces to Iron Man 3Thor 2, and Captain America 2.
The question is whether the One-Shots can expand to not just tell not just inconsequential side-stories, but also experiment with longtime heroes who may not yet be ready to carry their own features. A short could be a good test for a Black Panther or Iron Fist or Wasp, for example — characters who are beloved by die-hard fans but less known in the broader culture.
D’Esposito says the company “wrestles” with that idea. “There’s always a potential to introduce a character. We have 8,000 of them, and they can’t all be at the same level. So maybe there are some that are not so popular, and we introduce them [with a short] – and they take off. I could see that happening.”
The risk is establishing the potential movie too much, and then trying to retroactively recruit a feature filmmaker with those creative elements already in place. “Let’s say we wanted to introduce Ant-Man [in a short], and that would mean we have to cast him prior to having a filmmaker. That’s difficult and something we wouldn’t want to do,” D’Esposito says.
ant-man

But in that case, Marvel’s Ant-Man project has had a filmmaker on board for a long time – co-writer and director Edgar Wright (Hot FuzzScott Pilgrim vs. The World). Sources say he recently did shoot test footage for an Ant-Man film.
That’s not quite the same thing as a stand-alone short, but previewing those scenes publicly – say, at Comic-Con next week, or before any of the Marvel features heading to theaters in the next two years – could still be a way to pump up enthusiasm among fans.
Last year at Comic-Con, producer Joe Roth had 6,000 people cheering for a test reel of Snow White and the Huntsman, which featured samples of trippy visual effects and set pieces director Rupert Sanders intended to create – although it featured none of the actual stars. Still, it led to heightened anticipation for the final product, well before a single frame of the movie was shot.
A Marvel superhero short that stands on its own two legs (or more) would undoubtedly have an even greater impact.
Even if Marvel chooses not to show any Ant-Man teases (no one from the studio will confirm what’s in their showcase), they will be at a theater in San Diego next week to show off Item 47in its entirety.
A real-life scavenger hunt starts with The Avengers Second Screen app, which will become available as a free download at the iTunes store this Friday. Those who can’t go to San Diego can still use the app to gain access to a clip, but for Comic-Con attendees, it will offer the first clue to finding the trail through the city that ends with a screening on the evening of July 12.
Be sure to grab some shawarma to go, in case you get hungry. Item 47 may be short, but the hunt may take a while.

First things first- If you expected Billa-2 to be a stylish film, you will not be disappointed. Problem is, apart from a few stale gimmicks borrowed from a bunch of Hollywood films -- nothing really happens in this film at all. It is a miscalculation on the part of both the film's writer and director Chakri Toleti who has to take the blame for it.Packaged snazzily with a charismatic hero like Ajith, glossy-finish camerawork by RD Rajasekhar, exotic locations and fancy costumes, every frame of the film probably cost lakhs to put together, but it still feels like a hollow piece in the end because the story doesn't hold.
The film has no soul, not even a wafer thin story or any smart packaging in terms of commercial elements associated with a big hero film. In short, director Chakri Toleti has made a film without understanding the basic structure of commercial mass films and it lacks local flavour.
The story is a prequel on how David Billa became the biggest underworld don of all times. David Billa (Ajith) a refugee (?) comes to Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and his journey begins into crime. First he starts as a local diamond smuggler who graduates into drugs and later international arms smuggling. On the way up the crime syndicate, he meets a lot of treacherous opponents whom he eliminates one by one and becomes the dreaded don. But the treatment's so over-the-top, so indulgent that it fails to establish any connect.
In all fairness, the first half of the film is marginally better than the second. If Billa-2 is salvaged to some extent, it's thanks to Ajith’s irresistible screen presence and his spontaneous approach to the character. Sadly you have no words of praise for good looking villains Sudhanshu and Vidyut and girls Parvathy Omanakuttan and Bruna Abdullah who can't rise above the flawed script.
Do we really want impressionable young children to see this kind of violence where people are brutally chopped, throat slit and killed at regular intervals? You cringe in the scene when Ajit kills the corrupt policeman (KK) when he is having kinky sex in a brothel!
Don't go in expecting too much, perhaps you won't be too disappointed. Watch Billa-2 for its stylish presentation, it hasn’t got anything else to offer.

Old system against films stars restored

Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has recently issued a circular to all the film artists, insisting them not to take part in any television program. Anil V Thomas, General Secretary of KFCC, has said that TV shows featuring film stars make people sit back home, resulting lower revenue in theatres. Interestingly, this system was earlier implemented way back in 2002, when the TV industry in the state was booming. Meanwhile, various stars across the state have raised their voice against this 'lame' system.

Johansson too sexy for some roles

<i>Avengers</i> character preview: Black Widow
Actress Scarlett Johansson claims she has lost out on various roles because she has been deemed too sexy during the audition process.
The 27-year-old, considered one of the world's most beautiful women, claims her gorgeous face and figure have resulted in her losing out artistically.
"That has happened to me before, yeah. That's always an unfortunate thing to figure out, 'Why can't you see?!' For me, I would imagine when casting someone, you would want to challenge yourself in some way. It is so interesting to see actors transform. There are certainly plenty of times when I am definitely not sexy," femalefirst.co.uk quoted Johansson as saying.

Mumbai: She has choreographed quite a few hit dance numbers and now choreographer-director-actor Farah Khan will be seen grooving herself to an item number in "Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi", which marks her acting debut.

Talking about the item number, Farah tweeted: "Have woken up 1 hour earlier than alarm in xcitemnt. 'Joker' ad out n I'm shootng an item song 4 'Shirin Farhad...' bt this time I'm dancing! surreal."

"Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi" also stars Boman Irani opposite Farah and is the story of a 40-plus unmarried man and a woman. The film hits theatres Aug 24.

Farah is the name behind super hit item from "Chhaiya chhaiya" to "Munni badnaam", "Sheila ki jawani" to "Anarkali disco chali" and the soon to be out "Kaafirana" from her husband Shirish Kunder's "Joker".

Director Sujoy Ghosh found it difficult to digest the news that Farah is doing an item number and tried confirming it with her. To this Farah tweeted: "Yess sujoy!! u may have 2 change the definition after Boman and me dance in it!"

'True Blood' Panel Is a Lot of Stripping and Sex Talk

On Saturday evening fans packed into Ballroom 20 at SDCC to get a taste of the stars of True Blood. The room, which was already stocked with bloodthirsty vamp-lovers from the recently concluded Vampire Diaries panel, exploded when producer Alan Ball took the stage.

We begin with a trailer of things to come in Season 5: Sookie wishing to be human, Russell returning and feasting on the living, Christopher Meloni rocking a blue Polo. You can watch it all below:

But the most exciting part of the panel wasn’t a piece of footage at all — it was series star Joe Mangianello channeling his Magic Mike character and pulling out a few stripper moves for the audience.

Soon after the entire starring cast, including one very pregnant Anna Paquin stepped onto the stage, the topic turned to what moderator Tim Stack called, “The season of the bromance,” citing the relationship of characters Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgard). That’s when things started to get interesting. At first, the audience was treated to some innocent flirting between stars Moyer and Skarsgard, with Moyer praising his colleague on his cuddling abilities (accrediting them to his long arms). But after this the, um, temperature of the stage took a sharp rise.

Provoked by a question from Stack regarding Tara’s (Rutina Wesley) turn as a stripper, Mangianello stood up and treated the entire room to some very provocative choreography. But Alcide Herveaux wasn’t the only one to get in the Magic Mike spirit: Wesley herself, and True Blood creator Alan Ball, joined in with their own stripper moves. Ball even earned a dollar from satisfied customer Mangianello.

And that’s not all: this prompted series newcomer Meloni to get in the game, throwing out a few body rolls into the mix. All of the R-rated activity reminded the SVU vet of his old gig: “Trying to figure out what’s a sex crime on this show is very different.”

Although the conversation took a few innocent turns — with Ball announcing that Season 5 will reveal unanswered questions about the Stackhouse parents and how their fate affected their children, as well as the future of Rutina’s character and how Pam (Kristein Bauer de Straten) will become something of a hero to her — things quickly veered back to sex.

Ball admitted that there were, in fact, going to be more sex scenes in Season 5. Said Mangianello, “I sexually eviscerate another cast member in one of the episodes coming up,” leading Skarsgard to joke that he is the cast member in question.

And when you’re talking about sex, the mind of the contemporary bibliophile would naturally be led to Fifty Shades of Grey. Skarsgard, as fans likely know, has been rumored to be the lead of choice in the developing Fifty Shades film adaptation. The True Blood star said, “I've got to read that book. I haven't read the book, I haven't seen the script…”

And without missing a beat, costar Moyer added, “He's just lived the life.”

Considering the dark and dirty deeds he’s done on True Blood, Skarsgard isn’t too concerned with handling the comparatively lighter role of Christian Grey: “All I heard was he's got a chamber in his basement,” Skarsgard said. “My sweet daughter and I share a saw room where we have sex with people.”

After all this provocative dancing and talk of sex, the panel closed in the most wholesome and traditional way possible: Ryan Kwanten doing a handstand. That’s True Blood for you

Simpsons’ Back on the Big Screen: ‘Ice Age 4’ Debuts 3D Short16 Share Tweet

The Simpsons are going to the movies! Again. Well, one of them is. Here's a hint: she has shot a multi-billionaire, several Mafiosos and Albert Brooks.

Ice Age: Continental Drift 3D is coming to theaters July 13. Along with it, fans will be treated to the 3D animated short "The Longest Daycare," featuring young Maggie Simpson in what appears to be a prison movie spoof of some kind. This will mark the Springfield family's first foray to the big screen since their feature film in 2007.

The news is somewhat surprising, considering the 2011 chatter about the show potentially coming to an end. Although The Simpsons is locked in for two more seasons, the fate of the long-running Fox comedy is shakier than it has ever been. Could Maggie's partnership with Manny, Sid and Diego represent a resurgence in Simpsonian popularity?

'Pacific Rim' Wows With Insane Monster vs. Robot Footage Share

We’ve seen people fight aliens, aliens fight monsters, robots fight people, and just about every other combination imaginable. But somehow, even a tale as traditional as people and robots fighting alien monsters seems unique when handled by the creative mind of Guillermo del Toro. The director took his forthcoming sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim to this year’s Comic-Con, debuting some of the first footage of the film, which stars Charlie Humman, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Day. All parties involved, and some spectacular imagery, made what could have been a tired premise into a unique, innovative, and most of all exciting new cinematic prospect.
The footage opens with a snowscape, two men scanning the ice with a metal detector. They find something and begin chipping away at the ice. The metal detector starting going wild, and as the Tron Legacy-esque music kicks in, the camera pans up, a giant robot is revealed. Pulp, '20s style head, swirling fan chest, big clobbering arms. The robot takes a step forward before falling down. Reminiscent of the Prometheus money shot, with a bot instead of a spaceship. Except, this is far from the money shot of Pacific Rim.
A title card: "We created monsters." The reel cuts to shots of a monster with giant claws destroying gold en gate bridge. Massive claws ripping away at the structure while fighter jets try to shoot it down. Cutting back to the Pacific Rim base, soldiers suit up in the crazy, colorful base, preparing to man giant robots. Strapping on futuristic white battle suits (Mac?), the robot squad steps inside the mech to operate together. It takes two people to man the bot, which mimics there movements.
From there, it's all robot on monster action. Multiple robots are carried into the ocean with helicopters, dropped in to fight a long-nosed, snarling beast. Back at the base, Idris Elba delivers a Braveheart speech: "we're canceling the apocalypse." Badass. Cutting back to the robot/monster battle, the trailer provides the ultimate finishing move. With a swift set of fists, the robot smashes the head of the horned kaiju (a Japanese term for the monsters). Tons and tons of carnage. But this is only one robot and one monster. According to Del Toro, there are nine robots and six monsters in total. Assume lots of s**t will be destroyed.

'Ant Man' Test Footage Teases Comedy Action Adventure

There’s something about the realm of comic book movies that just begs for the spread of rumors. Beyond any other subculture, fans will spread hopeful gossip about their favorite serials and graphic novels taking form on the big screen. One of the most buzzed about unconfirmed projects, for quite some time now, has been a film adaptation of the Marvel Comic Ant Man, with a slew of creative forces (including director Edgar Wright) expressing interest in the prospect. No longer will fans have to pray to the Marvel gods (you know, like Thor): Ant Man is officially getting a movie...and we saw the first footage:

Ant-Man lurks in a vent, spying on two guards in sunglasses (because he's the size of the ant and he can do that). Edgar Wright wanted a practical costume, a mix the silver age and contemporary Ant-Man and it looks great. He rolls out of the vent and enlarging to sprint down the corridor. He shifts his size once more, micro size again in order to run along the top of on guard's gun. He jumps off the barrel and punches the guard in the face. Even in his super small size, he packs a huge wallop, a slow mo shot whipping the guy's mouth all to one side before sending him into a wall. Ant-Man enlarges once again to throw the second goon through the door. In true Edgar Wright spirit, the scene is filled with comedic beats, capping off with Ant-Man casually enters the elevator. All in a day's work.

Complaint against Padmapriya!

Popular Malayalam filmmaker MA Nishad, who directedPadmapriya in a movie titled 'No 66 Madhura Bus', has filed a complaint with the Film Chamber against the actress and her manager.

According to Nishad, Padmapriya's manager Vivek Ramadevan has interfered with his work. "The disturbance came despite a circular from the producers association that discourages artistes from depending on managers to deal with people in the industry," he said.

The director claimed that Padmapriya's dates were procured for Rs 8 lakh. However, her manager Vivek entered the scene and demanded another 2 lakh.

Nishad also added that she was not on time for the shooting and it created problems for him. Padmapriyais popular in Kollywood for films such as 'Thavamai Thavamirundu' and 'Satham Podathey'.

The Dark Knight Rises - Highly Anticipated Ending Part

"The Dark Knight Rises" is a huge, action-packed movie with epic cinematography, a pounding score and a musclebound menace who just might be Batman's biggest challenge.
At least, that's what it looks like it's going to be, based on about seven minutes of footage.
That's all that Warner Bros., IMAX and director Christopher Nolan were willing to show film writers at tonight's heavily locked-down Manhattan screening at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square. And yet film writers were more than willing to trudge in just to get a glimpse at what's already one of 2012's most anticipated films.
'It's an introduction to the antagonist," Nolan announced before the screening. But, he insisted, "it's really about the large-scale film format" - a 65mm system he used for about 50 minutes of the film that "gets me as a filmmaker to where I want to be."

Review By : Unni R NairKerala9.com
Am I confused? Yes indeed. How I wish I needn’t do a review or give a verdict. It’s not an easy job. I wish people stop asking opinions; just see films, like them or dislike them and go back home carrying the memories, good or bad…
Ranjith’s latest film ‘Spirit’ is a film that I wouldn’t like to review or give a verdict about. I’d prefer to see it, think about it, re-visit it if needed and not give out opinions or verdicts. If you ask me whether I liked the movie or not, my answer would be in the affirmative. If you ask me whether the film was really that good, captivating and worth it, I would be a bit confused.
‘Spirit’, I’d say is a good film. It no doubt is a good film. From a critic’s point of view, there may be flaws. It may seem less cinematic compared to Ranjith’s other films; there could be an opinion that he could have given some more time for the script to evolve into a better one; you’d say that Ranjith, in ‘Spirit’, becomes more of a preacher/reformer than a director; you may say that there is too much of boozing and hence a lag; you’d say that given Ranjith’s talent and versatility, the story and the film could have been better handled…you could find out many such flaws or minuses. But for me, I’d prefer to dwell on the pluses because the issue that the film seeks to address is real relevant and it’s a film that should be promoted, in many respects.
‘Spirit’ tells the story of Raghunandan (Mohanlal), who had been working in a bank abroad earlier and who has been donning many roles- that of a journalist, that of a television anchor and that of a writer. He is divorced from his wife Meera (Kaniha), who is now happily married to Alexy (Shankar Ramakrishnan). Raghu has a son, who lives with Meera and Alexy and Raghu has Meera and Alexy as his close friends. Raghu also hosts a very popular television chat show ‘Show the Spirit’ and just blasts whoever comes before him, with his power of argument and the evidences that he always manage to get through extensive research. But the other side of it all is that he is terribly addicted to booze and can’t live without it. He just gobbles bottle after bottle of the most expensive of brands. As Meera openly says, Raghu is a bad father while Alexy proves a good father to Raghu’s son; he is also inconsiderate at times, though he is an efficient guy. Anyway, things are not destined to go on like that; there has to be a change. That change starts taking place in Raghu’s life and then on, he starts observing Maniyan (Nandu), a plumber whom he is forced to follow.
Well, that’s what forms the plot. The film gains relevance as it discusses, in as realistic a manner as possible and at the same time remaining within the structure of popular cinema, a menace that has gripped the Kerala society in recent times. There are instances where you may feel that you are not watching a Ranjith film, but do we need to be so prejudiced? I feel that this is a well-intentioned film and hence we got to watch it. And given that it’s a subject that may not seem appealing, it demands great skill packaging it in a way that it appeals to all. Ranjith has done it excellently well. Thanks Ranjith for making this film.
Performance
Mohanlal comes off with a clean performance; he is good as Raghunandan. Nandu simply excels as Maniyan, this character would do great to his career. Shankar Ramakrishnan, director-turned-actor makes an impressive acting debut while Kaniha too is good. Thilakan doesn’t have much to do, but he is good. Tiny Tom impresses. Lena seems to be going great these days, she does a good job as Supriya Raghavan IPS while Siddharth and Kalpana too do justice to their roles.
Technical aspects
As usual, Ranjith has come up with a film that has some good technicians teaming up. The film is well-made, thanks to the support by the technical team.
Music
Music by Shahbaz Aman is good; the songs have an appeal, but don’t expect something like “Ee puzhayum…”.
Script
The way Ranjith has woven the whole thing around the issue that he wanted to discuss is what wins our appreciation. He deserves to be appreciated for brilliant characterisation as well.
Direction
Good work. I won’t endeavour to compare ‘Spirit’ with the recent other films of Ranjith, I would want to rate it separate and so I’d say, well done, Ranjith.
Verdict:  Well-intentioned, good work. Must watch!!
Rating: 3/5
